Scientific collaboration with the domaine de Chantilly (2019-2022)

The Centre de recherche du château de Versailles, the musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon and the musée Condé at the domaine de Chantilly concluded a partnership in 2019 to pool their resources and means in order to develop large-scale scientific projects between two châteaux united by a fruitful common history.

The partnership aims to initially use the precious sources on the history of Versailles and life at court held in the library and archives of the musée Condé, containing many papers written by the princes of Condé. This index of sources often unknown to researchers will have the primary objective of providing a tool for more in-depth research and will also serve for the development of exhibitions, conferences and joint publications.

The research carried out up until now has allowed for a study of the records of accounts (1675-1781) regarding the hôtel de Condé properties in Versailles, making it possible to identify, among others, mentions of artists and craftsmen active in Versailles (sculptors, rocailleurs, marble workers, gilders, painters, miniaturist painters, engravers, etc.), and therefore to trace the changing tastes of the princes of Condé. In addition, particular attention was paid to identifying any mention of Court life in the broadest sense, thanks to the identification of wardrobe expenses (wigs, perfumes, lace, jewellery, etc.), subsistence and table silverware, musicians and actors, and stable management costs including cars and carriages, among others. Catalogued in this same collection, gardens, the species planted and vegetable gardens have opened up another significant field of research that confirms the many common stakeholders active at the time in the grounds of Versailles and Chantilly.

The research was also extended to the Cabinet des Lettres manuscript collection, particularly for the reign of Louis XVI, all of the correspondence of whom is largely political or military, as well as the Cabinet des Titres collection of noble titles for which the inventories made after death consulted provide a glimpse of an incredibly rich collection in terms of better understanding the occupancy and functions of the Versailles residences of the princes of Condé, as well as their furnishings.

Once published online, this inventory will facilitate access to sources and fuel new research topics.
