Until the 17th century, the Old Greek word polyhistor referred both to someone who was extremely knowledgeable across a range of disciplines and a bibliographical vade mecum covering every field of knowledge.
It is a term that applies to Chantal Grell who, during her professional career, has explored the whole classical era in Europe, from Spain to Poland, in all its most diverse fields, yet always with Versailles as the centre of gravity.
It also applies to this two-volume collection, where highly scientific contributions on her favourite areas of interest, from sixty-four researchers, have been assembled.
Volume I deals with antiquities and historiography, and the history of knowledge and ideas, while Volume II looks at courts, diplomacy, the arts and collections.
